Hi all.

I have a Linksys WRT54G and I am trying to access the router's Web Interface. The problem I am having is that whenever I try to access the Web Interface, the router stops broadcasting the internet connection to all of the devices connected to them whether they're wired or wireless. The only way for me to regain internet connection is to insert the SetupWizard disc and go through setting things up all over again.

I need to access the Interface so that I can enable port forwarding.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

To view the router's web pages: You do not need an Internet connection. The router's "web pages" are built into the router. Use Internet Explorer, it usually works. JavaScript must be enabled. Use a computer that is wired to the router. In the non-working computer, temporarily turn off your software firewall. Point your browser to 192.168.1.1 , then login to your router. Your user name should be left blank. Your password is "admin" (with no quotes), unless you changed it. If you are using Zone Alarm, right click on the ZA icon in the system tray (lower right corner of screen) and then click "Shutdown ZoneAlarm", and see if this fixes your problem. If this does not work, try the following with Zone Alarm: Open the ZAISS control center, go to Privacy, then temporarily turn off Ad Blocking and Cookie Control, and see if that fixes your problem. If you are using Noton Internet Security with the Add-on Pack, be sure to turn off the Pop-up Blocker, and the Ad blocker. Some users have reported that they needed to uninstall the entire Norton Add-on Pack. If you cannot get anything at 192.168.1.1 then perhaps this is not your router's address. Go to "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Type in "ipconfig" (with no quotes), then hit the Enter key. Look at the "Default Gateway". Is it 192.168.1.1 ? Point your browser to the "Default Gateway", then login to your router. If the above fails, disconnect your modem from the router, and try again. If this corrects your problem, then most likely you have a "modem-router" rather than an ordinary modem. Report back with this problem, and also state the make and exact model number of your modem (not the router). If all of the above fails, power down your entire system, unplug it from the wall, wait one minute, then power up and try again. If all of the above tips fail, then reset the router to factory defaults: Power down the router and disconnect all wires from it. Wait one minute. Power up the router, allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes), then press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release the button and allow the router to reset and reboot ( 2-3 minutes). Power down router. Wait one minute. Connect one computer, by wire, to a LAN port on the router. Boot up system. It should work. If the reset does not fix your system, then you need to download and install (or re-install) the latest firmware for your router. After the firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.

Children's tech

As smart toys gain popularity, many are hoping that when technology becomes less visible play will come to the fore

M aura Sparks is sitting on stage with a small, blue plastic creature on her lap. This is the first prototype of Smarty, she explains, a voice-controlled digital assistant Sparks hopes to attract funding for and launch in late 2017.

New gadgets are launched every day in San Francisco, but this personal assistant has a twist: it is the first intended purely for children.

“The best way to describe it is Amazon Echo for kids,” explains Sparks, the co-founder of Siliconic Home . Addressing the audience at a recent conference in San Francisco on digital technology for children , she said Smarty is designed for kids aged between five and 12. It will answer their questions, remind them when homework assignments are due, wake them in the morning, control their bedroom lighting, and stream music and audio books. Parents can monitor the child’s activity through a web-accessible dashboard. “It is something a child can use from the moment they wake up to the moment they go to bed,” Sparks says.

Annual smart-toy sales worldwide are expected to grow from about $2.8bn in 2015 to $11.3bn by 2020, according to UK-based analyst firms Juniper Research . Digital toys and internet-connected devices for children, such as Smarty, are a rapidly growing part of that, along with intelligent building blocks, smart racing cars and drones, robots that teach kids how to code, and even a smart rubber duck aimed at the very young. There is now a $200 trainable robot dog called on the market, a $200 SuperSuit for laser tag that will begin seeking crowdfunding later this month, and , a $129 system to entice kids to run around the back garden that will launch soon.

“The industry is getting away from just the screen,” says Tonda Bunge Sellers, who organises the Digital Kids event. “The app is going to the background and the toy is where you interact.” Smart toys are gaining in popularity, partly because of a concern about kids spending too much time looking at screens, she says. “The physical is making it make more sense to the parent,” Bunge Sellers says.

“Last year the connected toy was an outlier, this year it is a trend, and by next year syncing your phone or tablet to a toy will be as common as putting double-A batteries in,” says Warren Buckleitner, editor of the Children’s Technology Review website. He welcomes the crossover between toys and screens, saying that when the technology becomes less visible, play comes to the fore. “We can begin talking about the quality of play and child development and not just whether screens are good or bad,” he says.
